Earth Day 2022

This years' theme is: Invest in our planet
At this very present moment, there’s no reason not to act for our planet.

Mother nature is desperately in need of help and only us humans who destroyed her can restore her. We need to change our behaviour and really start doing something… like invest in our planet! For the Earth Day month, this is a great time to discuss our environmental concerns together.

What is Earth Day and why do we celebrate it?

Every 22nd of April we celebrate Earth Day to remind us of the ongoing environmental crisis that has been sending us warning signals for ages. It’s a great opportunity to all sit down and discuss the problems like overpopulation, biodiversity loss, and declining environmental resources.

Earth Day was first founded in 1970 by the American senator Gaylord Nelson, also known as father of Earth Day. The first Earth Day led to the creation of many Environmental protection agencies and environmental laws in the United States, such as the National Environmental Education Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act. This special day went global in 1990 and mobilised more than 200 million people in 141 countries, lifting environmental issues onto the world stage.

Together we join to promote environmental protection awareness and recognise the global climate catastrophe.

This year's theme is to invest in our planet. “We need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet,” - EARTH.ORG, the official website who organised the Earth Day.

No matter how you choose to invest, it’s better to start now. As we’re running short of time to prevent natural disasters, not to mention an ongoing climate change. The key is for everyone, every sector to cooperate. The type of systemic change required to address the climate crisis cannot be undertaken by a single sector without the participation of others.

Supporting eco-friendly businesses

For individuals, the most important thing is to always be conscious about what we consume on our everyday basis. Supporting sustainable businesses would play a big role in acting for our planet. “We have a chance to completely rethink everything, from what we’re eating, to what we’re wearing, to what we’re sitting on, to our buildings and cars, everything. It’s happening, but it could happen at lightning speed if we bring the companies in, if we bring in and celebrate and support the inventors, if we find a way to educate our kids and promote climate literacy,” - Kathleen Rogers, president and CEO of EarthDay.org.

Since all the problems start with mankind’s lifestyle it can also be fixed by our new way of living as well. It’s actually simpler than you thought!

We understand that It might be hard to completely change your whole habits, so you can always start from little things…like a toothbrush; at Tooth.Eco, Designing beautiful and environmentally friendly oral care is what we do. By applying sustainable design principles, we have created an eco toothbrush that people want to keep forever. The recycled aluminium handle is beautiful enough to keep for a lifetime and we minimise the environmental impact of what you have to throw away, by making the heads as small as possible and using plant-based, biodegradable plastic. We believe that the power of change lies in the small things...As small as a toothbrush.

One of the choices to invest in our planet is to invest in Tooth.Eco. We’re currently open for investment on Crowdcube, you can also be part of our journey to make the world a greener place, starting from £10. Please email us at invest@tooth.eco for more information.

How can the dentistry industry become more sustainable?

All of us will go to the dentist at some point, whether that’s regularly or just when you have an issue – they’re a vital part of life, and are a regular sight when you’re out and about. However, one thing you might not have previously considered about your dentist’s office is the impact that they’re having on the environment. With the planet heating up, like all businesses and individuals, dentists have a role to play when it comes to fighting climate change.
